Jubilee Hut

There's a modest wooden hut perched on the high ground above Minehead, and frankly, it's the view that matters here, not the structure itself. Built to commemorate the Queen's Jubilee, it's become a proper focal point for anyone walking the ridge paths around this part of Somerset. You get sweeping views across Exmoor and down towards the coast - on a clear day it's genuinely impressive. The walk up isn't brutal, though it's a proper climb if you're coming from sea level. Most people allow 45 minutes to an hour from Minehead itself.

This works brilliantly as a half-day expedition if you're based at Minehead Caravan and Motorhome Club Campsite or even Butlins, both within a few miles. The hut itself is tiny - you're not spending hours here - but it's a good excuse for a hillside walk and a decent spot for a picnic if you've got the weather. Families with energetic kids will appreciate the achievable target; less keen walkers might find the climb a bit much for what's essentially a photo stop.

There's no café or facilities at the hut itself, so bring what you need. The real appeal is combining it with a wider Exmoor walk rather than treating it as a destination in its own right. Early morning or late afternoon light makes it worth the effort - midday can be a bit hazy. Well worth the detour if you're staying in Minehead and fancy getting up high without committing to a full day's hiking.
