Keepers Hill Wood

Walking through Keepers Hill Wood feels like stepping back about three centuries - proper old-growth forest, the kind where you half-expect to stumble across a gamekeeper's cottage. It's a genuine woodland experience rather than a manicured nature trail, with plenty of mature trees, natural undergrowth, and the sort of quietness you don't get anywhere near Cheltenham town centre.

The wood sits a few miles outside Cheltenham, making it an easy bolt-on to a Cotswolds park holiday. Walkers will get the most from this one - it's the sort of place where a two-hour ramble through the trees feels properly restorative without demanding mountaineering skills. Families with younger kids might find the woodland a touch too unstructured after an hour or so, unless they're the sort who enjoy building dens and turning over logs.

It's free to access and works well as a morning excursion if you're based at one of the nearby parks - Cotswolds Meadow Glamping is excellent if you want something with a bit more comfort than a standard campsite. The wood combines nicely with a day pottering around Cheltenham's Regency architecture or a gentle riverside stroll. Access is straightforward enough, though it pays to arrive early on weekends to find parking without faffing about.

Bring proper boots if there's been rain - the paths get boggy in places - and don't expect signposting to be crystal clear. That's rather part of the charm, though it means you need a functioning sense of direction or a map app that works offline.
