Keeper's Wood

The woodland around Keeper's Wood offers a proper escape from the flat Lancashire countryside, and it's the sort of place you stumble upon rather than plan for. It's a working forest, so you're not getting manicured trails or visitor centres - just trees, soil underfoot, and the occasional sound of active forestry work. The paths wind through mixed woodland with enough shelter that even on drizzly days it feels rather cosy.

Walkers will appreciate this more than families with young kids. It's genuinely quiet, which means you've got headspace, but it also means there's not much to entertain restless children for long stretches. You're looking at an hour's wander maximum before people start asking if you can turn back. History types won't find much - it's the trees themselves that are the draw, not any heritage story.

There's no obvious entrance fee or formal opening hours, which is typical for Lancashire's quieter woodland. Just turn up from Croston - it's barely 20 minutes away - and find a sensible spot to park. Early morning is best if you want the wood to yourself, though late afternoon when light filters through the canopy is rather lovely too.

If you're based at Royal Umpire or Leisure Lakes further afield, Keeper's Wood makes a decent half-day leg-stretcher. It's not dramatic enough to anchor your whole trip around, but combined with a walk around Croston village itself, it'll break up a caravan park day nicely.
