Kendallscroft Grove

Walking into Kendallscroft Grove on a grey Essex afternoon, you're genuinely surprised how quickly the outside world drops away. It's a proper woodland, the kind where you can actually hear yourself think - mature trees, decent paths, and none of that manicured park feel that gets tiresome fast.

The grove itself is fairly straightforward: ancient woodland with a network of walking trails that range from gentle loops to longer stretches. You're looking at anywhere from 30 minutes to a couple of hours depending on which route you take. The ground cover changes seasonally - bluebells in spring are something, though by summer it's all ferns and shade. Birdsong is genuinely good here, and if you're into woodland ecology, the mix of species tells you this place has been left to its own devices for a while.

It's best for walkers who don't need much in the way of facilities or viewpoints. Kids will get an hour's entertainment before asking when you're stopping for snacks. There's no tea shop, no play area, no interpretation boards - just trees. History enthusiasts might find the woodland itself interesting, but there's nothing archaeological screaming for attention.

If you're staying at Woodchests Glamping just three miles away, this makes a decent morning walk before heading back for lunch. Gosfield Lake Resort is slightly further but close enough for an afternoon outing if the weather turns decent. Free admission, as far as you can tell, though facilities are absolutely minimal. Go early or late to miss the dog walkers.
