Kenfig National Nature Reserve

The dunes at Kenfig rise up from the Glamorgan coast like something from another landscape entirely. This is a proper nature reserve, not a manicured park, so expect boardwalks threading through marram grass, fresh salt air, and the chance to actually spot something wild - adders, marsh orchids, and the occasional roe deer if you're patient enough.

What makes Kenfig distinct is the ruins of Kenfig Castle sitting inland from the beach. The Norman stronghold got swallowed by sand dunes centuries ago, and you can still see the remains if you know where to look. It's atmospheric stuff, walking past these fragments while birdsong cuts through the wind.

The reserve works brilliantly for families who want to burn energy without paying entry fees - it's free to wander. Allow two to three hours if you're doing the full circuit, less if you just want the beach and dunes. Spring and early summer are when the wildflowers peak, which changes the whole feel of the place.

If you're staying at Trecco Bay Holiday Park nearby, Kenfig slots in perfectly as a half-day escape. It's different from the usual South Wales coastal walk - less crowded than the Gower, more interesting than a generic beach sprawl.
