Kentwell Hall

The first thing that strikes you about Kentwell Hall is its sheer red-brick theatricality. This Tudor mansion sits just outside Sudbury, all gables and chimneys and the kind of stately grandeur that makes you understand why it's been a film set more than once. Inside, the rooms feel genuinely lived-in - portraits stare down from the walls, furniture sits as if someone's just stepped out, and the kitchen is properly vast in that overwhelming way only old kitchens manage.

You're looking at a solid two to three hours here, longer if you're the type to read every placard. The grounds are substantial too - formal gardens, estate walks, a moat that actually has water in it. Families with younger kids might find themselves done quicker, but school-age visitors tend to engage with the period rooms and the general sense of stepping back in time.

It's not one of those over-polished heritage properties. There's a real feeling that the Hall is still somebody's home, even if it's open to the public. That's either its strongest asset or its biggest liability, depending on whether you prefer your history immaculate or genuine.

If you're based at Lake View Lodges or Cranfield Retreat nearby - both under two miles away - it makes an easy morning or afternoon sortie. Combined with Sudbury's own attractions or a wander round the surrounding countryside, it slots into a broader Suffolk itinerary without fuss. Well worth a visit if you're in the area, though don't expect theme park thrills.
