Walking into Keys Plantation feels like stepping into proper woodland - ancient trees, dappled light, the kind of quiet that makes you realize how little of this remains in Yorkshire. It's a forest in the truest sense, not some manicured country estate. The paths wind through old growth, and you get the sense this place has been left largely to its own devices.

You won't find visitor facilities or marked trails here in the traditional sense. This is a place for walkers who like to find their own way, exploring the forest floor and spotting whatever's about - woodland birds, deer if you're lucky, fungi sprouting after rain. It's the sort of spot history enthusiasts appreciate too, given how long these woodlands have survived near York.

Allow a couple of hours minimum, though you could easily disappear for half a day if you've got nowhere else to be. Best visited in autumn when the canopy thins and you can see further, or spring when everything's coming alive. Summer can feel a bit dense and closed-in.

It works brilliantly as part of a broader woodland ramble round York - pair it with a stay at Wigwam Holidays Ball Hall Farm nearby (under 6 miles away) if you want a proper back-to-nature break. The farm's glamping set-up takes you back down to earth nicely between woodland walks. Keys Plantation isn't going to entertain little ones with playgrounds or cafes, but if you've got teenagers or adults who actually enjoy forests rather than just visiting them, it's well worth seeking out.
