Kilfeaghan Dolmen

You'll find yourself standing before a proper ancient monument - Kilfeaghan is a portal tomb, one of those megalithic structures that scattered across Ireland and Northern Ireland thousands of years ago. Two massive upright stones form a doorway, with a capstone balanced across the top, and behind them sits the burial chamber itself. It's the kind of place where you can actually touch stone that's been here since the Neolithic period, which does something to you.

The site sits just outside Newry, making it an easy stop if you're exploring the area. There's not much to do here beyond looking, taking photos, and trying to imagine the people who built it - so budget twenty minutes, maybe half an hour if you're the type to sit and think about Bronze Age burial practices. The walk from the car park is straightforward enough.

History enthusiasts will find it worthwhile. Families with younger kids might find it a bit underwhelming unless they're already interested in archaeology - there's no café, no visitor centre, just the stones. If you're staying at one of the caravan parks nearby - Kilbroney is closest at just over three miles away - it's absolutely worth a quick detour between other outings in the Mourne area. Pair it with walks around the mountains or a visit to Newry town itself. Free admission, as far as these heritage sites go, though access details are worth checking ahead.
