Kilracken Wood

The woodland walk at Kilracken is the sort of place you stumble upon rather than plan for - which probably explains why it stays relatively quiet even in summer. It's a proper working forest, not a manicured tourist attraction, with decent trails winding through mature trees and plenty of moss-covered undergrowth that tells you it rains here regularly. The paths are mostly well-trodden and manageable, though after wet weather you'll want proper boots rather than trainers.

This is walker territory, full stop. If you're after a gentle woodland meander between Markethill and the rolling terrain that defines this part of Armagh, you'll find it here. Kids can manage the trails fine, though there's no playground infrastructure or facilities - bring what you need. The forest doesn't shout about itself, which is rather the point. You get birdsong, the smell of damp earth, and the kind of quiet that means you'll actually hear it.

Allow an hour for a decent loop. It costs nothing, as far as anyone can tell, and there's no official visitor centre to navigate. If you're staying nearby - Tepee Valley Campsite is only just over six miles away - it's a natural spot to burn off some energy on a morning walk before heading elsewhere. It won't stop traffic on its own, but paired with a park holiday in the area, it ticks the woodland-walk box properly. Winter and autumn are probably best; spring brings midges that'll drive you up the wall.
