Kit Green

A proper woodland walk just outside Wallingford, Kit Green is the sort of forest that rewards a lazy afternoon rather than demanding much planning. Ancient trees, decent paths, and enough space to actually breathe - it's the kind of place where you can lose an hour without noticing the time's gone.

The woodland itself is straightforward: mixed deciduous forest with established trails that won't require specialist kit or serious fitness. Families will find it manageable, though younger children might get bored once they've had a poke around the trees - it's not got the dramatic appeal of somewhere like the Cotswold Water Park further afield. Walkers and dog owners, though, will genuinely enjoy this. The paths are clear enough, the shade is proper relief on warm days, and there's something restorative about being under decent canopy.

Timing-wise, allow a couple of hours for a proper wander. It's free access, which is always a bonus when you're camped at one of the nearby sites - Ridgeway View or The Chilterns View are closest if you're basing yourself here. Go early or late in the day if you can; the light's better and you'll dodge the school run crowds.

Kit Green fits neatly into a Wallingford-based holiday. It's close enough for a morning walk before heading into town for lunch, but far enough out that it feels like proper countryside. Not world-changing, but honest woodland and well worth the ten-minute drive from your pitch.
