Kitchen Bridge

The River Cam winds through Cambridge in ways that surprise you if you're not paying attention, and Kitchen Bridge is proof of that. It's a modest Victorian crossing just east of the city centre, tucked away on a stretch of river where punts give way to serious rowers and the whole atmosphere shifts from tourist hustle to something quieter.

The real draw here is the view upstream and down - you get a proper sense of how the Cam threads through the landscape, with college buildings visible in one direction and open meadowland in the other. It's the kind of spot where you notice the light changes on the water, where you might actually see someone pole a punt without a phone camera in their face.

Walkers love this stretch. The banks are accessible and reasonably flat, making it good territory if you've got elderly relatives or younger kids who tire easily. Allow 20 minutes for the bridge itself, but most people spend longer wandering the footpaths either side - there's real appeal in just following the water for an hour or so.

It works well as a quieter counterpoint to the busier central colleges. Both Lodeside Glamping and Fen Meadows are within striking distance, making this an easy addition to a broader Cambridge exploration. Go early or late in the day when the crowds thin out. The light's better then anyway, and the river feels properly yours.
