Kitley Show Cave

You descend into the earth and the temperature drops noticeably. Kitley Show Cave, just outside Plymouth, is a proper caving experience without needing ropes or a guide's harness - you walk through it yourself, torches in hand, following the lit passages deeper into the Devon limestone.

The cave system opens up into chambers where stalactites hang like frozen waterfalls and the floor is slick with moisture. It's genuinely atmospheric rather than touristy. Kids find it thrilling - that mix of slight claustrophobia and genuine discovery. Parents tend to enjoy it precisely because it doesn't overstay its welcome.

Allow about an hour to move through without rushing. The cave stays at a constant cool temperature, so bring a layer. It's the sort of thing that works well on a rainy afternoon, though the walk from the car park to the entrance is a bit of a slog if you're not used to uneven ground.

Fits nicely with a stay at Hidden Hill, just down the road - you get the glamping experience sorted, then have this as your rainy day activity. Dartmoor Domes is also close by if you fancy something a touch more outdoorsy. The cave itself is manageable for most ages, though younger children need steady feet and a proper torch of their own. Not a must-do, but worth the detour if you're in the Plymouth area and want something off the usual beaten path.
