Knepp Park

Knepp is where Sussex's rewilding revolution actually happens. The 3,500-acre estate near Horsham has been left to do its own thing since 2001, and what's emerged is a proper working landscape - part farm, part nature reserve, utterly unlike the managed green spaces most of us are used to.

You won't find manicured paths here. Instead, there's a tangle of returning woodland, meadows gone wild, and water features that attract everything from rare turtle doves to the occasional escaped horse. The whole point is to let nature work without constant human interference, which means it actually feels alive in a way that conventional nature reserves sometimes don't.

Walkers get the most from Knepp. The terrain is proper boggy in places and demands decent boots, but that's half the appeal - you're moving through something genuinely wild rather than following a dotted line on a map. Birdwatchers go fairly mental for it, especially during spring migration. Families with older kids will find it engaging; toddlers might find the lack of facilities a bit limiting.

If you're based at any of the surrounding parks - Knepp Wildland Safaris is practically on the doorstep, and Honeybridge Park sits just up the road - it's worth at least a half-day visit. Allow three to four hours to actually see something beyond the car park. Check access details locally before you arrive, as opening hours and admission policies can be a bit fluid for a working estate.
