It's a working historic site rather than a museum - you're looking at actual structures that have sheltered people for centuries, which gives the whole experience an edge over the sanitised attractions.

What you get here is genuinely the building itself. Walk around the perimeter, examine the masonry, try to date the different phases of construction by the stonework alone. The layout tells you how medieval people actually organised their lives - kitchens, halls, defences all speaking to practical concerns that feel immediate once you're standing there. It's not flashy, and it won't occupy you for hours, but that's rather the point.

History enthusiasts will absolutely rate this. Families with restless kids might find it a bit static unless they're genuinely interested in medieval architecture. Allow 45 minutes to an hour if you're thorough. The free admission is excellent value, though do check opening hours before you travel as these sites can be unpredictable.

If you're based at one of the nearby caravan parks - Cuckoo Down Farm or Oakdown, both exceptional - this slots in nicely as a morning excursion. Ladram Bay is slightly further but equally good. The combination of coastal holiday parks with inland historical exploration makes proper sense for a mixed-interest family break. West Hill itself is unremarkable, but you're close enough to proper South Devon attractions to make a longer day of it.
