Knockamillie Castle

The ruins of Knockamillie Castle sit on a hillside overlooking the Firth of Clyde, a short drive inland from Dunoon. What's left is modest - a 15th-century tower house that's been through centuries of decline - but the setting more than compensates for the fragmentary stonework. You get views across the water towards Cowal, and on a clear day it's genuinely worth stopping for.

This isn't somewhere to spend hours. Twenty minutes to wander round the exterior, take photos, and absorb the view is about right. There's no visitor centre, no interpretation boards, just the castle sitting in the landscape as it has for 500 years. The approach involves a bit of walking through field gateways, so decent shoes help.

History enthusiasts will appreciate the Campbell connections and the tower's role in medieval Argyll politics, but honestly, most people come for the view and the sense of place. It's the kind of stop you make when you're exploring the coast between Dunoon and Cowal rather than a destination in itself.

If you're based at Beach House Pods nearby, it's an easy morning excursion before heading to bigger attractions. Hunters Quay Holiday Village is a bit further out but still within striking distance. Both parks give you proper access to this quieter side of Argyll - less crowded than Loch Lomond but with plenty of character. The castle doesn't charge, far as anyone can tell, and there are no set hours. Just show up when the light's good.
