Knockman Wood

Three kilometres of mixed woodland on the edge of Newton Stewart might not sound like a headline act, but Knockman Wood delivers proper old-school Scottish forest walking without the tourist crowds. The trails wind through beech and larch, opening occasionally onto views across Galloway's rolling moorland - the kind of vistas that remind you why people bother hiking in the first place.

It's a straightforward loop that takes most people an hour, maybe ninety minutes if you're stopping to photograph things. The paths are well maintained but narrow in places, which means it can feel genuinely peaceful even at weekends. Families with kids aged seven-plus will manage it fine; younger ones might find it a slog if you're pushing for the full circuit.

What works well here is the lack of fanfare. No visitor centre, no café, no gift shop trying to sell you carved owls. Just a car park, some signposting, and the forest doing what Scottish forests do - looking dramatic even when the weather's average. Spring's cracking if you want to catch the woodland flowers, but honestly, any season beats staring at Newton Stewart's main street.
