Knolls Wood

The woodland stretches quiet and undisturbed, with proper old-growth trees that have seen centuries pass. Knolls Wood near Ellesmere is the sort of place you stumble into rather than plan for - ancient mixed forest that feels genuinely remote despite being walkable from town. You'll find yourself on narrow paths that wind between oak and birch, with the canopy thick enough that even on bright days there's a cool, filtered light. It's genuinely peaceful, which means it's absolutely rammed with dog walkers at weekends but beautifully empty on weekday mornings. There aren't facilities to speak of - no cafe, no visitor centre, no interpretive boards - which is precisely the appeal. This is woodland on its own terms. Walkers and nature types will get the most from it; kids might find it dull after half an hour unless they're the sort who enjoy building dens and spotting birds. The paths are manageable but muddy after rain, so proper boots aren't optional. Allow an hour or two depending on which routes you take. It's free to wander, naturally. If you're based at Abbey Green Farm B&B and Touring Park just down the road, this is an easy morning out before heading back for lunch. The Ellesmere lake area nearby offers more structured walks if you want something less rough-around-the-edges, but Knolls Wood delivers proper woodland without the polish.
