Knot Hill

The walk up Knot Hill rewards you with proper views across Lancashire's rolling countryside, and it's close enough to Preston that you can knock it off without eating your entire day. The peak itself isn't dramatic - we're talking moorland rather than mountain - but the vantage point is genuinely worth the effort, especially if you time it right and catch the light falling across the valleys.

It's a straightforward walk that suits families comfortable with a moderate climb and ramblers after something achievable without needing specialist gear. The route takes you through open country with decent paths underfoot, though wet weather can turn it boggy. Allow a couple of hours return from the car park depending on your pace - faster hikers might do it in ninety minutes.

If you're basing yourselves at one of the caravan parks nearby - Brickhouse is barely a mile and a half away, while Beacon Fell View and Little Oakhurst Boutique Glamping are within five miles - this works perfectly as a morning expedition before heading to one of the bigger attractions in the area. It's not a destination that'll occupy you for hours, but as part of a week combining moorland walks with the Preston area, it's a solid addition to the itinerary.

The admission is free and unrestricted - turn up whenever suits you. Summer is best for firm ground and clear views, though autumn brings its own appeal with the light lower and softer. Winter can be bleak and muddy in equal measure.
