Knowle Hill

The walk up Knowle Hill isn't long, but it's steep enough to make you feel like you've earned the view. From the top, you can see right across the Chalke Valley - proper rolling countryside that looks different depending on which way the light hits it. On a clear day, you'll spot the spire of Salisbury Cathedral in the distance, which gives you a sense of scale for the whole area.

It's the kind of place walkers will genuinely enjoy. Not a slog, not a doddle - just a solid 45 minutes or so of proper walking that rewards you with a genuine payoff. The surrounding land is open downland, so there's nothing to hide the views when you get to the top. Children will manage it fine if they're used to walking, though younger kids might need a bit of encouragement on the steeper sections.

If you're camping nearby - Chalke Valley Camping is only two miles away, or Summerlands Caravan Park a touch further - this works brilliantly as a morning walk. Pop back for a late breakfast. The proximity to Salisbury (just a few miles north) means you can combine it with the cathedral or a look around the town itself.

There's no visitor centre or facilities at the summit, so bring water. The hill's accessible year-round, though winter can get muddy after rain. Go on a weekday morning and you'll likely have it mostly to yourself.
