Knutsford Heath

The heath sprawls across open moorland just outside Knutsford, all heather, gorse and low scrub that turns proper purple come late summer. It's the sort of place you can actually breathe in - no crowds, no facilities, just rough grassland and the occasional walker with a dog. The trails criss-cross the reserve without any fussy signposting, which means it feels genuinely wild rather than managed to death. You're looking at maybe forty minutes to walk the perimeter if you're leisurely about it, or just twenty if you cut straight across. It's free to access, naturally, since there's nothing to gate off.

Walkers will get the most from this. The terrain's firm enough most days but can get boggy after rain - proper boots aren't overkill. Families with young kids might find it a bit bare and unforgiving after an hour or so; there's no café, no playground, no "attractions" in the modern sense. Birdwatchers show up for the heathland species you won't see elsewhere round here. Spring and early summer are best - you'll catch breeding birds and wildflowers before the heather gets tramped down.

If you're based at one of the nearby caravan parks - Royal Vale, Greenfields or Pickmere Leisure are all within four miles - this makes a decent morning walk to stretch your legs. It doesn't demand much planning. Just turn up, walk, come back for lunch. That's rather the point of it.
