Ladies Grove Wood

Walking into Ladies Grove Wood east of St Albans, you're immediately swallowed by proper old-growth forest - the kind where light filters through in patches and you can actually hear yourself think. It's a working woodland rather than a manicured nature reserve, which means the paths are genuine and sometimes a bit muddy, but that's part of the appeal.

The trees here are ancient. History buffs might be interested in the coppiced sections - signs of medieval management practices - though there's nothing dramatic to photograph.

Based near Fuzzy's Farm holiday park, Ladies Grove makes a solid addition to a Hertfordshire break. It's free and accessible, though facilities are minimal. Go when it's not raining heavily unless you're properly equipped - woodland paths can turn into channels. Spring and autumn are best, when you can actually see through the trees.
