Lake District Coast Aquarium

The aquarium sits right on Maryport's seafront, and it's a proper working fish tank rather than some sprawling tropical palace. You're looking at tanks full of local marine life - seahorses, jellyfish, ray species - the kind of creatures you might actually spot in the Irish Sea if you're very lucky. It's intimate, which means you won't spend hours here, but that's rather the point.

For families with young kids, it's worth an hour or so. Older children tend to lose interest once they've clocked the main tanks. The real appeal is watching actual local species rather than endless tropical fish, which sets it apart from inland aquariums. Touch pools let kids handle starfish and anemones if the mood takes them, though don't expect the scale of operations you'd find in bigger cities.

The aquarium is free to enter, which softens any disappointment if you breeze through faster than expected. Location-wise, it's virtually on top of Harbour Side Caravan Park - you could roll out of your van and be looking at seahorses in five minutes. That proximity makes it a handy rainy-day option when the Lake District weather turns, rather than a day-long destination in itself.

Maryport itself is a working port town, not particularly picturesque, but honest. The aquarium reflects that unpretentiousness. If you're staying nearby and want something low-key and local-focused, it does the job. Don't trek specially for it, but don't skip it either if you're in the area.
