Lamaload Reservoir

Water stretches out calm and wide between the Cheshire hills, and you're immediately struck by how quiet it is here. Lamaload Reservoir sits just outside Macclesfield, a proper working water body that's somehow managed to stay off most people's radar. It's the kind of place where you can walk the perimeter without fighting crowds, watching fishermen cast lines and the occasional heron doing patient work along the shallows.

The walk around the reservoir takes the better part of two hours if you dawdle, which you should. Paths are easy enough for families with older kids, though younger ones might find the distance wearing. The views open up gradually - nothing dramatic, but genuinely lovely in that understated way Cheshire does well. Autumn here is particularly good, when the water reflects the colours properly.

It's free to visit and there are no fixed opening hours - you just turn up. Bring binoculars if you're into birdwatching; the usual woodland species are around, and occasionally something more interesting shows up. On weekends it can get busier with locals, but midweek it's wonderfully peaceful.

If you're based at one of the nearby parks - Buxton Caravan Club or Lime Tree Holiday Park are both within six miles - this makes an easy half-day outing. It won't fill a whole day on its own, but paired with a walk around Macclesfield town itself or a visit to the nearby moorland, it rounds out a decent morning or afternoon. Worth the detour if you're in the area and fancy something low-key.
