Lane End Down

The walk up Lane End Down rewards you with proper views across the Hampshire countryside - rolling chalk downland that stretches for miles if the weather's kind. It's not a dramatic peak, but that's rather the point. This is the gentle, undramatic English landscape that people forget about because it doesn't have a castle or a café at the summit.

You're looking at a steady climb from the Alresford side, with the path cutting through chalk grassland. Takes about 45 minutes to reach the top, depending on your pace and how many times you stop to catch your breath. The views work best when you're not battling low cloud - come on a clear day and you can see well beyond the immediate parish. Walkers will find this worthwhile, especially if you're building it into a longer loop around the area. History buffs might be less captivated; there's no visitor centre or interpretation boards, just grass and sky.

Free to visit, obviously - it's open countryside. Bring water if you're going mid-summer; there's no shelter up top. If you're based at Holden Farm Camping just 0.7 miles away, or any of the other parks dotting the area around Alresford, this makes a solid half-day excursion. Pair it with a wander through Alresford itself afterwards - the town's got enough charm to warrant a proper look. Worth the walk, without being life-changing.
