The mix of mature oaks and conifers creates that lovely dappled-light atmosphere, especially in autumn when the floor becomes a carpet of leaves. You're looking at something between thirty minutes and ninety minutes depending on how deep you fancy going and whether you stop to actually notice things. It's not dramatic, but it's solid.

Walkers get the most from this one. The paths are well-trodden enough not to require proper map skills, but interesting enough that you won't feel herded. Families with primary-age kids will find it manageable - nothing steep, no long boggy sections that'll have them complaining within fifteen minutes. We found it free to access, no facilities to speak of, so bring a drink if you're stopping long. The spot works brilliantly as a morning walk if you're based at Janson Fishery Caravan & Camping, which sits three miles away - close enough for a proper outing, far enough that you feel like you've actually gone somewhere. Don't expect major drama or rare sightings. Come for the quiet, the trees, and a genuine break from Nottingham's edges.
