Lankham Bottom, Dorset

You'll find Lankham Bottom tucked away in the rolling chalk downlands just outside Dorchester - the sort of place that rewards a proper explore on foot rather than a quick drive-by. It's a valley carved into the Dorset landscape, with steep chalk banks rising either side and a small stream running through the bottom. The walk itself is the thing here: you're essentially following a sunken lane down between high banks where the chalk has been worn away over centuries, creating this dramatic cutting through the countryside.

It's excellent for walkers who've had enough of obvious viewpoints and want something with a bit of geological interest. The chalky banks are genuinely striking - pale and exposed - and there's something quite atmospheric about being down in the valley floor with the landscape towering either side. Kids find it good fun too, scrambling along the stream bed, though parents need to watch for muddy sections after rain.

Allow a couple of hours if you're making a proper day of it and exploring the surrounding paths. Go in spring or early summer when the banks are alive with wildflowers and the stream actually has water in it. Winter can be bleak and muddy.

It fits neatly into a broader Dorset downland circuit - you could easily combine it with walks around the chalk figures nearby, then base yourself at one of the local glamping spots like Green Valley Yurts or Giants Head Caravan Park, both within five miles of Dorchester. This isn't a destination in itself, but it's a proper gem if you're already exploring the area.
