Lassington Wood

Not a destination in itself, but absolutely worth factoring into a stay at Apple Orchard Camping or Pelerine - both within easy reach and far better value than city accommodation if you're basing yourself near Gloucester.

It's free and accessible year-round. Just go early on weekends if you want it quieter. The woodland's at its best after rain when everything smells properly alive, though it gets a bit churned up underfoot. Combine it with a walk into Gloucester itself - the cathedral's worth seeing - and you've got a solid half-day sorted.
