Lea Wood

The woodland around Lea Wood offers proper walking territory just outside Malmesbury. You're looking at mixed forest - the sort of place where you can actually breathe, with enough tree cover to feel properly removed from things but open enough that you won't get lost after five minutes.

It's good for walkers wanting something low-key. The paths are manageable without being trivial, and there's genuine woodland atmosphere rather than the manicured feel of some country estates. Families with older kids will manage fine; younger ones might struggle if the mud's been heavy. The sort of place you do a couple of hours in, maybe grab a picnic spot if you find one that appeals.

Timing-wise, spring and early autumn are when it feels most alive - plenty of light filtering through the canopy, and you won't be wading through wet bracken. Winter's dark and damp here. Summer can get a bit thick and airless if there's been no breeze.

Geographically, it sits well with a wider Malmesbury area visit. Burton Hill Caravan & Camping Park is barely two miles away, making it an easy morning or afternoon walk from your base. You could string together a decent day combining this with a wander round the town itself. It won't take all day - that's not what Lea Wood is about - but it's the sort of forest that rewards a proper ramble rather than a quick lap.
