Levenhall Links Bird Reserve

The coastal path near Musselburgh opens up suddenly at Levenhall Links, and you're greeted by vast salt marshes, mudflats, and that particular light you only get on the Firth of Forth. It's not dramatic - there are no cliffs, no grand vistas - but it's quietly absorbing in a way that makes you slow down.

The reserve is genuinely excellent for bird spotters. Waders pick across the mud, terns dive overhead, and if you're lucky you'll catch sight of something rarer. I spent a good hour just watching through binoculars, though you don't need to be experienced to appreciate it. The flat, accessible paths make it manageable for families with younger kids, though there's honestly not much here to hold a four-year-old's attention for long unless birds are their thing.

Allow an hour or two depending on how seriously you're taking the birdwatching. The best light is early morning or late afternoon, when the water picks up colour and the birds are more active. Bring binoculars if you have them - they make a real difference.
