Leys Wood

The Leys Wood spreads across the flatlands east of Newmarket, a proper patch of ancient woodland that breaks up the relentless fenland horizon. Walking through here, you get tall pines mixing with older broadleaves, and the forest floor stays reasonably well-maintained without feeling over-managed. It's the sort of place where you can actually hear birds rather than just see them on a laminated board.

This is walker territory more than anything else. The paths are decent, muddy in winter but navigable year-round, and there's enough space to get genuinely lost if you're not paying attention - which some people enjoy. Families with younger kids might find an hour enough; older children who actually want a proper woodland hike will get more out of a full afternoon here. The flat terrain makes it accessible without being boring, and there's something refreshing about forest this close to Newmarket without the manicured park feeling.

If you're staying at HappenOak Treehouse just down the road, this is your obvious morning walk - literally five minutes away. Even Piggles Retreat, three miles off, makes it a reasonable detour on a free day. The wood doesn't demand entry fees or advance planning; you just turn up and walk. Spring brings decent bluebells. Autumn's where it really shows itself though - the light filters through differently, and the paths wind through proper colour.
