Lilbourne Castle

The earthworks at Lilbourne Castle are what remain of a Norman motte-and-bailey fortification - basically a raised mound with a wooden palisade that would've dominated this corner of Leicestershire around 900 years ago. What you're actually looking at today is a grassy bump in the landscape, plus some ditches and banks that outline where the outer defences sat. Not exactly dramatic ruins, but if you know what to look for, you can read the whole settlement pattern in the contours.

This appeals mainly to archaeology buffs and serious history walkers rather than casual day-trippers. Children might manage ten minutes before getting bored - it's open ground with no interpretive boards or facilities, just the mound itself and views across farmland towards Lutterworth. The real value here is contextual: you're standing where actual Norman power was exercised, however briefly, and the site sits within a landscape dotted with similar medieval earthworks if you care to seek them out.

Access appears to be free, though there's no visitor infrastructure on site - you'll need to check locally for current access arrangements. Allow 30 minutes unless you're doing serious surveying work. If you're based at one of the nearby caravan parks - Manor Farm is closest at less than a mile away - it makes a decent supplementary walk to round out a morning, but don't plan your whole visit around it. Combine it with Stanford Hall if you want proper historical architecture alongside your earthworks archaeology.
