Limekiln Clump

A thick stand of conifers rising from flat Norfolk farmland, Limekiln Clump is the sort of woodland that makes you grateful for tree cover in this otherwise relentlessly open landscape. It's small - no more than a few hundred acres - but proper atmospheric when you're inside it, with decent paths that don't get churned to mud even after rain.

You won't find facilities or car parks or any of that. Access appears to be on foot from surrounding footpaths, which keeps things refreshingly low-key. Most people here are dog walkers and locals who know the area. It's not a destination in itself, but rather a welcome break from the endless arable fields that characterise this corner of Norfolk.

Walkers will get the most from it - nothing too demanding, just a chance to stretch the legs and see some actual woodland. Kids might find it a bit samey after twenty minutes unless they're keen on spotting birds or making dens. In winter it's rather bleak; spring and autumn are better bets when the light filters nicely through the trees.

If you're staying at Pinewoods Holiday Park just down the road near Peterstone, it's worth a morning ramble to break up a holiday spent on the Norfolk flatlands. Pair it with a longer walk across the open country to the west - that's where the real Norfolk character lies. Go early if you want any sense of solitude.
