Linton Stepping Stones

There's something rather lovely about a proper crossing that doesn't require a bridge. Linton Stepping Stones are exactly what they sound like - a series of flat stones laid across the River Wharfe just outside Skipton, offering walkers a genuinely useful way to get from one bank to the other without getting wet. The stones are well-maintained and fairly spaced, though you'll want to watch your footing if the river's running high or after rain.

This is the sort of thing that appeals most to families with half a day to spend exploring, or walkers doing the longer riverside routes through Wharfedale. Kids usually enjoy the careful stepping bit - it feels like a proper adventure rather than just strolling along a path. The surrounding area is lovely countryside, quiet enough that you can actually hear the water, and there's a decent circuit walk to be had if you fancy tacking it onto a bigger day out.

You won't need more than twenty minutes here on its own, so best to combine it with other attractions nearby. The caravan parks at Wharfedale and Wood Nook are both close by, making this a nice addition to a holiday in the Yorkshire Dales. Bolton Abbey Estate, further down, offers more substantial walking if you want to make a full day of it. Access is free - no visitor centre, no fuss, just turn up and cross. Early mornings are quietest if you want to avoid other walkers.
