Listening Gallery

The Listening Gallery sits just outside Settle, a small audio installation that catches you off guard if you know what to expect. It's essentially an outdoor amphitheatre carved into the landscape where sound behaves in genuinely weird ways - whisper from one spot and someone standing across the space hears you clearly, even from a distance. The acoustics are properly strange, the sort of thing that makes you linger longer than you'd think.

There's no charge to visit, and it's open all hours, which means you can rock up whenever suits. It takes maybe twenty minutes to work out how it functions and play about with the sound reflections, though families with younger kids might stretch that to forty-five minutes if everyone's keen on testing it out. Don't expect queues or facilities - it's minimal and bare-bones in the best way.

This works as a proper quirky waypoint on a Settle area trip rather than a destination in itself. If you're based at Peaks and Pods, The Dalesbridge Campsite, or any of the glamping spots scattered round here - Ribblesdale Pods and Malham Glamping are both within five miles - you can squeeze it in between walks in the Dales without faffing about. It's the sort of stop that breaks up a day nicely, particularly if you've got restless teenagers who need something slightly unusual. Don't expect jaw-dropping views or Instagram moments. What you get instead is a genuinely interactive experience that actually teaches you something about how sound moves through space.
