Little Bowden Park

The reserve sits just outside Market Harborough, a proper working landscape where you can actually see what Northamptonshire looked like before the big agricultural changes. It's not dramatic or showy - just quiet woodland, grassland, and the sort of ponds that attract dragonflies in summer.

You're looking at a few miles of walking if you want to make a proper morning of it, though there are shorter loops too. Birdwatchers do well here, especially spring and autumn when passage migrants turn up. The woodland bits are genuinely lovely in bluebell season, though you'll need to time it right - late April usually works. Kids won't be bored if they're the type to spot things and get excited about newts, but it's not a playground, so manage expectations.

Bringing your own binoculars is worth it. The grassland sections feel refreshingly open compared to the surrounding farmed land, and that's actually the point - it's been managed to let wild plants establish themselves again. Go midweek if you can; weekends draw a steady trickle of locals.

If you're staying at one of the nearby caravan parks - Get Lost In Nature or Buttercup Meadow are closest - this makes an easy morning or afternoon visit without needing to drive far. It slots in nicely with a broader Northamptonshire nature reserve circuit. Free to access from what I can establish, though best to check locally when you arrive. Allow two to three hours for a relaxed explore.
