Little Hales Wood

There's something about stepping into Little Hales Wood that makes you forget Saffron Walden is barely a few miles away. This proper woodland sits quiet and unassuming on the Cambridgeshire-Essex border, offering the kind of forest walk you'd expect to feel more remote than it actually is.

The wood itself is a mix of mature trees and denser undergrowth - nothing dramatic, but genuinely pleasant to walk through. Paths wind through without being overly manicured, which is rather the point. You're looking at a straightforward woodland experience: green canopy, leaf litter underfoot, the occasional bird doing its thing. Allow 30-45 minutes to properly explore without rushing.

Walkers will get the most out of this. It's not somewhere you'd take restless children expecting trails and viewpoints - it's too subtle for that. But if you're after a solid leg-stretch away from the car, or somewhere to clear your head between days exploring the wider area, it does the job well enough.

The real strength here is convenience. If you're glamping at Hidden Gem or Readers Field - both just down the road - Little Hales Wood makes an easy morning walk without needing to trek across the county. It's the sort of place that justifies a longer park holiday without demanding you make it the centrepiece. Go when the weather's decent; woodland walks aren't brilliant in the rain unless you're properly keen.
