Little Mere

Little Mere is a proper small lake just outside Whitchurch, the sort of place locals know and visitors often miss. It's shallow, reed-fringed, and genuinely peaceful - you won't find crowds here even in summer. The walk around it takes maybe twenty minutes if you meander, which you should. The water reflects everything on a still day and it attracts a decent mix of birdlife, so bring binoculars if you're into that sort of thing.

It works best for quiet types and families with young kids who need a gentle stroll rather than a hike. If your lot wants drama and distance, they'll find it flat and underwhelming. But if you're after somewhere to clear your head between park visits - Marbury Camp and Lodge sits just a mile away - this does the job nicely without fuss.

Free to visit, no facilities to speak of, and no obvious opening hours because there aren't any: you just turn up. Go early or late if you want it to yourself. Bradley Hall and Bramblewood are both within easy reach if you're basing yourselves at one of the holiday parks in the area, making it a handy half-hour stop rather than a destination. Wet underfoot in winter, so decent boots matter. Don't expect a café or a visitor centre. What you get is water, air, and the odd heron. Sometimes that's exactly what you need.
