Llandyfan Church

The churchyard sits quietly on the hillside above Ammanford, and it's the sort of place you'd stumble upon by accident rather than plan an afternoon around. Llandyfan Church is small - genuinely small - with that worn, honest look of a rural Welsh chapel that's been doing its job for centuries without fuss or fanfare.

Inside, it's simple. Stone walls, modest windows, the kind of space where you can actually hear yourself think. The real draw is the setting rather than any grand architecture or treasures. You're looking at views across the valley, and the churchyard itself has character - old graves, weathered headstones, the green slope falling away towards the Amman Valley.

This works best if you're already walking in the area. History types will appreciate the age, but don't expect tourist infrastructure or even clear opening times - you may find it locked. It's genuinely worth a detour if you're camping nearby at Llandyfan Camping or Gelli Glamping and fancy an easy stroll, but it's not the sort of place to drive an hour for on its own.

The walk up from Ammanford takes about thirty minutes, and the path is straightforward. Allow twenty minutes inside and around the churchyard. Go on a clear day - the views are considerably better than in drizzle, which is fairly often in these parts.

Pair it with a longer walk through the Black Mountain foothills or combine it with a visit to nearby Carreg Cennen Castle if you want proper structure to your day.
