Llech Gron

Standing stones don't get much more mysterious than this Bronze Age circle perched on Ceredigion's windswept hills. What remains of Llech Gron - literally 'round stone' in Welsh - are five weathered uprights arranged in a rough circle, though archaeologists reckon there were originally more. The largest stone stands about shoulder height, carved by centuries of coastal weather into something wonderfully sculptural.

History buffs will find plenty to ponder here, especially given the site's age - we're talking 4,000 years old. The views across the Cardigan Bay coastline are properly spectacular on a clear day, stretching from the Llyn Peninsula down to Pembrokeshire. Getting there involves a decent walk across farmland from Llanon, so come prepared for muddy boots and the odd curious sheep.

Families with younger children might find it a bit of a trek for what is, admittedly, a fairly modest collection of stones. But for those who appreciate the quiet drama of ancient monuments, it's well worth the effort. The site feels genuinely remote and untouched - no visitor centre or interpretive boards, just you and 4,000 years of Welsh history. If you're staying at one of the nearby caravan parks like Brynarian or Woodlands Holiday Park in Llanon, it makes for a lovely afternoon walk when the weather's behaving.
