Llyn Frogwy

Walking boots squelch through the boggy ground as you approach this surprisingly wild corner of Anglesey. Llyn Frogwy sits in rough moorland just a few miles from Bodorgan, feeling miles from anywhere despite being relatively accessible by car.

The lake itself is proper wild - no manicured edges or tourist facilities, just a dark stretch of water surrounded by heather and gorse. Birdwatchers come here for the variety, particularly during migration periods when all sorts turn up. The shoreline varies from marshy inlets to rockier sections where you can actually get close to the water.

Families with young children might find it a bit challenging - the terrain around the lake is uneven and can be quite boggy after rain. But older kids who don't mind getting their boots dirty will love the sense of wilderness. The lack of crowds means you often have the place to yourself, which is rare on Anglesey in summer.

Allow a couple of hours if you want to walk most of the way round, though there's no proper path - it's more of a pick-your-own-route affair. The area works well as a contrast to busier Anglesey attractions if you're staying at one of the nearby parks like Glan Gors Holiday Park or Penrhos. It's free to visit and always open, being essentially just countryside with a large puddle in the middle.
