Loch Lomond National Nature Reserve (Endrick Mouth)

The Endrick Mouth feels like the loch's secret corner - where the River Endrick spills into Loch Lomond proper, creating a genuine working nature reserve rather than a polished visitor attraction. There's no visitor centre, no gift shop, no crowds. What you get instead is a proper wetland habitat where you can spot wildfowl, waders, and if you're lucky, osprey and white-tailed eagles that come down from the Cairngorms.

Walkers will find this rewarding. The paths loop around the mouth itself, offering decent views across the loch towards Ben Lomond without the effort of tackling the hill itself. Birdwatchers should bring binoculars and patience - dawn and dusk are best, and autumn migration season (September-October) can be exceptional. It's free to access and takes roughly an hour if you're not stopping to stare at every movement in the reeds.

Gartocharn sits just south, so you're not far from anywhere on the loch's western shore. If you're camping at Milarrochy Bay or glamping at Loch Lomond Retreat - both within easy reach - this makes a proper morning out before heading to busier spots like Balloch Castle. It won't thrill young children who need instant gratification, but families keen on wildlife and those wanting peace will find it worth the short drive. The loch's always dramatic here, especially when cloud clings to the hills across the water.
