Lochmuir Wood

The walk through Lochmuir Wood hits you straight away - proper dense woodland, towering conifers mixed with broadleaves, the kind of place where the light gets filtered green and the air smells like soil and pine. It's on the outskirts of Glenrothes, so not some remote wilderness trek, but it genuinely feels tucked away once you're in among the trees.

You'll find woodland trails threading through here, some obvious and well-trodden, others a bit rougher underfoot. The wood wraps around Lochmuir itself, so there are spots where you get glimpses of water through the branches. It's the sort of place that rewards a proper wander rather than a quick lap - take a couple of hours if you want to actually breathe it in. Families with kids will do fine on the main paths; the terrain's manageable though can get muddy after rain.

Historically it's been logged and worked over the years, so it's not ancient old-growth forest, but that doesn't diminish it. The woodland's doing its job - it's quiet, it clears the head, and on a grey Scottish afternoon it's exactly what you want.
