You're looking out across the rolling Somerset countryside from a proper elevated spot near Castle Cary, and on a clear day it's the sort of panorama that makes you understand why people bother with viewpoints at all. The climb up is straightforward enough - nothing that'll defeat anyone with reasonable fitness - and there's a real sense of reward once you're up there surveying the patchwork of fields and hedgerows stretching out below.

It's the kind of place walkers absolutely lap up. You can tie it into a longer ramble around the area without much fuss, or just nip up for twenty minutes if you're pressed for time. History buffs might appreciate the elevation itself - it's the sort of vantage point people have valued for centuries. Families with kids won't find much to do once they've taken the photos, so it's more of a stop-off than a destination in itself.

If you're camping at Hadspen Glamping or Long Hazel Park nearby, Lodge Hill makes a cracking addition to a morning walk. It's free, it takes roughly half an hour including the walk up, and you'll want clear weather to get the best of it. Don't expect facilities - bring water and decent shoes. It's not a massive detour from Castle Cary itself, so slot it in around other things rather than making it your main event. The real magic happens on those rare clear days when you can actually see something.
