Long Kin East Pot

The walk down to Long Kin East Pot takes you through proper limestone country - the sort of terrain that makes you understand why Yorkshire's cave system developed in the first place. The pot itself is a vertical shaft descending into the hillside, and it's the kind of thing that stops you dead when you round the corner and suddenly it's just there, dropping away beneath your feet.

This isn't a show cave with handrails and guided tours. What you get is raw geology - a natural sinkhole where you can peer down into the darkness and feel the cold air rising up. On a clear day the walk out here from Lancaster is genuinely pleasant, though you'll want proper footwear because the ground gets boggy and the limestone underfoot is slippery when damp.

It appeals most to walkers and geology types rather than families hoping for an afternoon's underground adventure. Allow an hour for the walk plus time to explore and take photographs. The real pleasure is the landscape itself - rolling moorland with actual views - rather than the pot as a standalone attraction.

If you're based at Orcaber Farm or Primrose Glamping Pods, this works as a solid morning walk without eating the whole day. The exposure is genuine enough to feel like you've done something, but it's not a technical cave descent. Go when it's been dry for a few days unless you fancy squelching back to the car in mud.
