Long Meg Mine

The view from Long Meg Mine is absolutely worth the trip out from Carlisle, though it's not a conventional tourist spot and that's precisely why it works. You're standing at what was once a working sandstone quarry - now abandoned - with sight lines across the Pennines that genuinely take your breath away on a clear day. The mine itself is basically a scooped-out hillside, and walking the perimeter gives you a proper sense of the landscape's scale.

It's free and there's no formal infrastructure to speak of. Walkers absolutely love this place because it combines geology, industrial heritage, and proper countryside views in one go. Families with kids old enough to manage uneven ground will find it engaging for an hour or so - clambering about the old quarry walls keeps them occupied. Historians enjoy picking out the tool marks and understanding how stone was extracted by hand. Fair warning: it can get muddy and there's no signage, so come with an Ordnance Survey map or a decent GPS app.

The nearest town is Carlisle, about eight miles south, which makes this a natural half-day detour if you're based at High Hall Farm Campsite. It's not a destination you'd build a holiday around, but coupled with a walk across the open fells nearby, it becomes something proper rather than just another viewpoint. Go early on a weekday if you want the place to yourself.
