Long Plantations

The woodland here isn't the sort you'll find postcarded and packaged. Long Plantations is working forest - the kind where you're walking through proper managed conifers, not a curated nature reserve. It's planted, commercial, but that doesn't make it any less useful for a decent walk from Stockton-on-Tees way.

The paths wind through neat rows of pine and spruce. It's dark in places, cathedral-like if you're generous with the description. There's very little fanfare to it - no visitor centre, no interpretation boards telling you which tree is which. You just walk. Some people love that rawness. Others find it a bit samey.

Give it two hours if you're doing a circular route. The ground can be boggy after rain, so proper boots matter. Spring's lovely when the light filters through fresh growth. Winter's bleaker - you'll see more sky between the thinned-out branches, which some prefer.

If you're based at Donnewell Farm just down the road, this is an easy local option for stretching your legs without driving anywhere. It won't rival a proper country estate for views or variety, but if you want a straightforward woodland walk that won't take half your afternoon, it does the job. Don't expect wildflowers or open vistas. Do expect solitude and the smell of pine needles underfoot.
