Longfield Wood

Walking into Longfield Wood feels like stepping into proper countryside the moment you leave Amersham behind. This is ancient woodland - the kind with tall beech and oak that block out the sky, dappled light on the forest floor, paths that wind through genuine green space rather than manicured parkland.

There's not much here in terms of facilities or attractions, which is rather the point. You come for the walk itself - following the trails through the trees, listening for woodland birds, maybe spotting deer if you're quiet enough. It's the sort of place where an hour disappears without you noticing, though you could easily stretch it to two if you're in no rush. Families with young kids will manage the easier paths, though the terrain can be muddy and root-riddled in places, so proper footwear matters.

Historically it's valuable woodland - the kind of ancient forest that's become rare in the South East. Walkers and nature enthusiasts will get far more from it than anyone looking for a structured day out. There's no cafe, no visitor centre, no entry fee that we can find - just the wood itself.

If you're camping at Bella Vista or Home Farm Camping nearby, this makes an excellent half-morning expedition before returning for lunch. It's close enough to Amersham to be genuinely accessible, but far enough in to feel like you've properly escaped. Not Instagram-famous, and better for it.
