Longhaven Cliffs Nature Reserve

The cliffs here drop away suddenly, and you're left staring out at the North Sea with nothing between you and Norway. Longhaven Cliffs Nature Reserve sits just south of Peterhead, a proper wild stretch of Aberdeenshire coastline that doesn't get the tourist crush you'd find down at Dunnottar or similar. What you're walking through is a working sea bird sanctuary - guillemots, razorbills, and fulmars nest in the rock faces from spring through early summer, and the noise alone is worth the trip. In winter it's quieter but more dramatic; wind whips across the headland and the water below churns grey-green.

The walk isn't demanding - an hour there and back if you take it steady - but the ground's uneven and can be boggy after rain, so proper shoes matter. The cliff edge needs respect; there's no fencing, and the drops are genuine. Families with young children should keep a close eye on things, though older kids who like nature and aren't spooked by heights will find it gripping. Photographers come here for the light and the seabird action. Walkers appreciate it as part of a longer coastal route. History buffs get less out of it unless you're interested in how traditional communities used these cliffs and headlands.

Free to access. Pop down from Peterhead Marina Bay Holiday Park - it's only four miles away - and give yourself a morning. Go on a clear day if you can; mist rolls in fast and ruins the views entirely.
