Longspring Wood

Longspring Wood sits just outside St Albans, a proper woodland spot that's worth seeking out if you're after something quieter than the usual Hertfordshire draws. It's the kind of place where you can actually hear yourself think - mature trees, woodland paths that wind through without being too manicured, and a genuine sense of being away from it all despite being close to town.

Walkers will get the most from it. The woodland itself isn't vast, so you're looking at maybe an hour or so if you potter about rather than powering through. The paths are manageable enough for families with older kids, though it's not a destination for buggies. There's something rather lovely about it precisely because it doesn't try too hard - no visitor centre, no cafe, no faffing about. Just trees and soil and the occasional shaft of light through the canopy.

If you're staying at Fuzzy's Farm, just down the road, this makes an easy morning walk without needing to pile everyone in the car. Combine it with a wander into St Albans itself and you've got a decent half-day sorted. The wood works best in spring when there's something actually happening underfoot, or autumn when it looks properly moody. Summer's fine but it can feel a bit samey.
