Lord's Moor Plantation

Lord's Moor Plantation sits on the edge of Northallerton, a proper working forest rather than a manicured nature reserve. You get a real sense of active woodland management here - evidence of selective felling, young saplings pushing through, the forest floor thick with needles and fallen branches. It's the kind of place where you actually feel you're walking through something useful rather than just admiring it.

The main draw is the network of paths threading through mixed conifer and broadleaf woodland. Nothing flashy, but solid walking terrain for a couple of hours if you're keen, or a quick 45-minute loop if you're not. The trees are tall enough to create that forest-cathedral feeling without being oppressively dense. On a clear day you get glimpses across the Vale of Mowbray, which adds a bit of breathing room to what could otherwise feel claustrophobic.

Walkers will get the most from this - it's proper leg-work rather than a stroll. Kids might find the first thirty minutes interesting, then get restless. It's free and open all hours as far as I can tell, which is refreshing.

If you're based at Pembroke Caravan Park or Camp Kátur just down the road, Lord's Moor works as a morning walk before heading into Northallerton for lunch. Don't come expecting rare birds or photogenic vistas - come for honest Yorkshire woodland and room to clear your head.
